I've been listening to an old cassette of this music for several day's now. Man the playing and singing is phenomenal!!! Anyone know if this is available on CD? I've been trying to fashion a mago-like stick from bamboo to practice on. While I've managed to make several I can't seem to get one in pitch with the stick on this recording. Does anyone know the key?

I believe that recording is only available on cassette. The player is David Blanasi and the songman is Djoli Laiwanga - two of the finest WAL performers.
I don't recall what pitch his stick is, but I'd try F and F# as Djoli's voice is usually pretty high.
Let us know how you get on.
Kyle

Thanks Kyle. You're right on as for the pitch. I listened with my tuner on and I think F# is it. The style of playing is hot! and much different than the WAL players I have heard of course I have not heard many (enough) to really compare. Davids style is different than Darryl's~Is Davids style indicative of older WAL playing?
I bought this cassette back in the early 90's soon after I began playing. I am happy it lasted this long. I think I'll transfer it to cd...

Just acquired Charlie McMahon"s discography. In "TjilaTjila"s album leaflet he talks about traditional Aboriginal music, naming Bamyilli song as the one to really not miss ! If you can manage to convert your tape in mp3 file, I'd love to hear it

Blanasi was regarded as the best Mago player of his generation (and in many minds as the best player ever) and was known as the 'free jazz master' due to his mastery of syncopation within the regional playing vocabulary. I strongly suggest you get Arnhem Land Popular Classics if you've not got it . It not only showcases more of Blanasi's fantastic playing (along with others) but provides excellent liner notes detailing the dimensions and characteristics of the instruments used.

Francis you can hear Bamyilli along with some other really great music, at John Burrow's website Manikay.com http://www.manikay.com/albums/bamyilicorroboree.shtmlArnhem Land Popular Classics~I've been listening to this since the begining of my time with "didg" in the early 90's except I have no liner notes. I had been in contact with an ethnomusicologist in the Pacific Northwest. She sent a copy of a copy.... I just noticed the liner notes are printed at Manikay....

I believe there is a recording of the same material here http://www.ididj.com.au/store/music.html scroll down about 2/3rds of the way down. There is also a 45 rpm Ep titled Bamyili. AFAIK it's only available on these vintage vinyl recordings.
