Thought I'd put this here, it is a photo shown to me by family and I asked if it were ok for me to add it here for posterity and also for education purposes.
The pic is of Bulunybuy Gurruwiwi (deceased), son of Monyu and older brother of Djalu'. Those who were at the Rripangu Yirdaki Festival in Germany in 2002 might remember Andrew Minyapa, Bulunybuy is his father. I'm working with Terrence Gaypalani at the moment on collecting stories and filling in the gaps... my knowledge is really quite limited and there are still so many missing 'jig-saw' pieces to be found. Terrence tells me that he learnt about yidaki from Don Dhakaliny (quite an amazing player who has performed publicly and been recorded, but it has been a bit hard for me to track down his recordings), and Dhakaliny in turn learnt from Bulunybuy.
I've been told that all of Monyu's sons, and there were many of them, were ALL yidaki players.
Bulunybuy's cemetry rests at Galupa outstation, pic below.

Oddly, you can hear Don playing yidaki on Dr. Didj's album 'Into the Woods' on the track 'Brolga' which starts with a manikay recording then riffs off it. If memory serves, it was Litalita 1 singing.
I've got video of Don playing and telling stories a couple years back, but I bet Stephen Knopoff has heaps of recordings of him in his prime.

Hey Randin!
I remember that recording, you're right with the info. In the cover notes, I think there was a "Don Murray" credited with the yi daki playing. I can't check as my CDs are all over the places, and mostly scratched
Knopoff has a "Dhakaliny Yunupingu" which he recorded in the 1990s, I wonder if this is the same person with the wrong surname used by Knopoff? The Dhakaliny I know is Burarrwanga rather than Yunupingu. Randin, do you know if there was/is a Dhakaliny Yunupingu?
Here's a short vid I have of Dhakaliny Burarrwanga playing yi daki:

hey!
back in the forum after ages and ages...! big mission now to catch up with all the unread threads and messages...
i think i have a vid in which Don plays yidaki during funeral at Mata Mata... i should locate it because it's a brief moment in a longer video, but i remember i liked it because he, at his age, was not only playing very well, but doing so in motion due to the "parade type" performance, holding the yidaki on one hand and his walking stick on the other... happy to share that vid if you want, Guan... by the way, u in AL these days?? u have some unanswered mail from me!
happy to have the time to be here again! m
