The new mago master himself, Darryl Dikarrna Brown, will be the next artist-in-residence at iDIDJ Australia for March/April 2007!

Sounds good! I take it Darryl will be making and painting sticks. Any idea what motifs he'll be using?

Hmmm.... it seems Darryl's Aboriginal name should really be Digarrnga if we used Yolngu Matha orthography. But he's not Yolngu of course. Also, David Blanasi's Aboriginal name was Bambinat which I haven't seen written anywhere else before, although in some texts he's jokingly referred to as Peanut (in Rolf Harris' book I think)! May be a corruption of Bambinat.

In the liner notes for Arnhem Land Popular classics - the cd has several recordings of David Blanasi from 1961-62 - he is referred to as
David "Pa:m" Peanut" Bylanadii (David Blanasi)
which I always found a little mysterious. . that it was really Bambinat explains a bit better the naming.

Hey Martin,

You're right on the ball there... shows your grey matter is still working very well :D

I knew I'd seen something like that in print somewhere, but unfortunately my brain just doesn't work the way it used to... :(

Darryl's here at the moment by the way, having a nice sleep... he'll be able to catch the first game of the AFL season this week!

Here are some pics of Darryl out in the bush cutting mago as well as a couple of him playing mago. It has been good listening to Darryl's technique first-hand. He achieves a very rich tonality and has great power.... I'm a bit overwhelmed actually just listening to him.

Here are the pics below. If you don't see these, or other pics (and videos and other media) posted to this Forum, it is because you are not logged-in. Hi Darryl,

Welcome here and congratulations on being the new artist-in-residence.

Hey Guan,

The Mago Darryl is playing looks familiar, is that a Dhugurun E by any chance?
