Hi Paul,

You might be right. Probably makes them worth seeing but I cant get over to Brisbane until a few days at the earliest. If you are right about them not lasting long, its probably a good idea that I remove the links or I might miss out on them :(

Fingers crossed

Nick

They're not on Ebay, Hawk.

It's hard to comment on the authenticity without seeing the proximal and distal ends. They do look like Djalu (family) sticks, but closer examination would be needed. If you do get them Nick let us know how they turn out.

I found some bigger pics. Two of these are by Djalu and the other, more elaborately painted one, is by Vernon. Having examined the bigger pics I believe they are authentic. Not too hard to find if you know where to look!

What is it about the proximal and distal ends that reveal their pending authenticity? It seems more likely that they might have just been painted up to look like the real thing. Hmm....

I've seen enough sticks made by Djalu and his family that I am fairly confident in my ability to judge their authenticity upon inspection. True, they could've been painted up to look like Djalu's sticks, but they look pretty authentic to me in terms of shape, decoration and overall appearance. Of course, I'd love to see the mouthpieces and distal ends just to make sure.

Why don't you pop over to Brisbane and check them out or contact the seller to provide detail pics. I'd look into it if I was in Australia, but the costs of shipping without having them assessed by someone I trust over there is prohibitive in my view.

Kyle

I supposed to be heading up tomorrow to have a look at them if all goes to plan. Ive probably only played two Djalu's that I have seen in various shops. All I know about Djalu authenticity is that the instruments are usually pretty big and heavy, and they have the Galpu body paint style art on them. I guess I have about a 50/50 chance of making the right decision on them based on my very limited knowledge. Unless someone has some tips?

Nick.

Here are some "bore" pics of 4 of my instruments the first 3 are Djalu and the last one is made by Larry Djalu's son. Mine have all been oiled so may appear a bit darker than what you are looking at if they haven't. Note most Djalu instruments have quite a bit of work to the bell end of the instrument as you can see form the pics. hope this helps

Paul

I'm not commenting on the authenticity of the sticks pictured above...but, as a collector of art and prehistoric artifacts I just wanted to point out that there is no foolproof way to authenticate a Djalu. Fakers can study Djalu's sticks just as well as anyone on this forum. They can cut the same termite hollowed saplings and use the same tools and pigments to turn out identical copies. Hell...people can make very good copies of Picasso's, they can make and correctly patinate prehistoric stone tools which end up undetected in museums, and they can counterfeit something as technically advanced as currency bills. That said, a trad didjeridu is wonderfully primitive...and that makes it easy to copy. The cheap price is a red flag IMHO...the benefit of paying the steep price to an art center in Yirrkala is that you know you're getting the real thing.
