NT reggae boys prove Manly hit
BEN LANGFORD

June 21st, 2010

FROM the shores of Blue Mud Bay to the north shore of Sydney, another Arnhem Land band is making a name for themselves.

The 11 members of Garrangali cut quite a swell when they headed out in the ritzy Sydney suburb of Potts Point last week, painted up in traditional colours ahead of a performance at Manly.

They played two shows at the Old Manly Boatshed and Susan Sandery, who accompanied them to Sydney, said the band was a hit.

"They got four encores," she said.

"The guys who have been there for years at the Boatshed said no act's been able to pull that off."

Garrangali is touted as being the next big thing out of Arnhem Land. Their self-titled album was released earlier this year, produced by Yothu Yindi members Stu Kellaway and Matt Cunliffe.

The music is firmly in the saltwater reggae style of Arnhem Land, except for one disco track aimed squarely at the dance floor.

Back home in Yilpara, the band members could not be contacted yesterday. As soon as they returned home, they swiftly set about settling back in - they went out fishing.
