Entitled '
Mediating Forms: The Spiritual and Personal Dimension of Yolngu Portraiture', this promises to be an excellent opportunity to deepen our understanding of Aboriginal art as both personal expression and codified tradition.
Morphy says of this lecture:
Quote:
In this lecture I adopt a cross-cultural perspective on portraiture. Portraiture concerns the relationship between art and the human person. I will argue that the presence of a person and attributes of a person's 'biography' are two relatively autonomous components of portraiture. I develop my argument comparatively, considering commonalities between very different artistic practices including conventional Western portraiture based on likeness, abstract expressionalism, North West Coast Native American art and Indigenous Australian art. I will argue that this broader perspective reveals commonalities across cultures that deepen our understanding of portraiture as a process for mediating identity.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend, as it's quite a few hours away on a Monday evening, but I wanted to alert others of this opportunity.
