Hi minima,
I think, that Eddy Halat and hes Didges ore silicon mouthpiece not are the problem, because Eddy never said, he made Yedakis ore Yolungu-Art. Eddy-Halat-Didges are european made Didges and they are very good. Djalu was a guest of Eddy some years ago and I dont know, he said anything against Eddy and hes Didges.

Hello Alf,
We have be mindful about certain issues I think. I have nothing against your taste about Eddy halat didgeridoos. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it. But I see it kind of the same thing. All these guys, somehow very coincidently, spend some time with Djalu or Darryl then they find themselves selling very expensive sticks. Of course He would never say that he makes trad stick as this would be a lie. But if one has respect for this culture and this people; there should be , ideally speaking, a limit to what you can or not (financial profit). Intellectual property comes into game here I think. What do Yolgnu get out of his sticks ? Nothing!

I am in favour of some form of labelling system like the CI index because I feel that if it is set up right then the buyer will be able to make an informed choice in the didge he buys, whether its authentic traditional or not. Of course there would be teething problems with setting something like this up but I feel if the co-operation is there from the maker to the retailer then any problems would be kept to a minimum. Keep those shonkies out.
cheers everybody :D

It would be a challenge to have one labelling system that is accepted industry-wide. Let's see if we can do something to push it forward...

we have the problem of junk sticks from Asia as well as those pretending to be respectful against Yolgnu yet misusing them.

The two biggest problems are:

1) the cheap reproduction imports into Australia from parts of Asia;

2) mass-produced and non-Top End instruments made from eucalyptus. If you look at the websites of the most prominent US, Australian and European specialist didgeridoo retailers, their stock almost invariably consists of generic sticks which if you trace them back, come from a small number of mass harvesters. As the instrument advances along the 'production line' different names mostly Aboriginal ones, become attached to the instruments.
