Hi everyone,

Let's all try to play as close to what Vernon is playing and record ourselves, it will be a great exercise I reckon.

here my basic transcription of the "gudurrku"-mouthsounds:

dith dhu dith dhu-d-hirrrl

dith dhu rung rung dawh - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung rung dawh - dith dhu rung rung dawh

dhoo - rung rung - dhoo - rung - dhoo

rung - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung rung dawh - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dhirrl dawh

dhoo - rung rung - dhoo - rung - dhoo

rung - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dith dhu rung rung dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung dhirrl rung rung- dith dhu rung rung dawh
dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl

dhoo-dhooo

Let's also put the link to the original sound file here too : Vernon_Gudurrku.mp3

Edit : Cool transcription Nitupsaar.
Just... to my ears, in this line :
dith dhu rung RUNG dawh - dith dhu rung RUNG dawh - DHIRRL dawh
the articulations in capital and bold sound the same to me.
I'd right the whole line like this :
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dhirrl dawh
What do you think ?

___

The whole vamp hence being (to my mind) :

dith dhu dith dhu-d-hirrrl
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh
dhoooo - rung rung - dhoo - rung - dho - rung
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dhirrl dawh
dhoooo - rung rung - dhoo - rung - dho - rung
dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh - dhirrl dawh
dith dhu rung dhirrl rung rung- dith dhu rung dhirrl dawh
dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl - dith dhu dhirrl
dho-dhooo

Pretty much bang on methinks Francis. Well transcribed boys. I tend not to get so technical when analysing vamps and just memorise the pattern as if I transcribe and play off that I tend to get caught up in the wording and feel it loses something. To each his own!

"bang on" ... ??? (excuse my French :-)

I'm not so much into wording either, but still into visual. I could not have transcripted the "rung" and "dawh" but they do fit in perfectly, good job Nitupsaar !
I need to "see" the pattern to memorize it, that's my "drawer" side.
Just copied Nitupsaar's transcription, made Homer's "dho!" a little longer or shorter depending on how they sounded, and changed a rung for a dhirrl.

Too hard for me to transcribe but I can see sense in both Ambros' and Francis' efforts. The thing is that if I used only Yolngu Matha orthography which will be my tendency anyway, there are some things Vernon does which I can't really transcribe orthographically with YM so, to me, transcribing yidaki or mago rhythms can't exactly describe what the mouth is doing but transcription does serve a useful purpose as a memory aide. In other words, if what you write down helps you remember the sequence of sounds/techniques to be played, it can help in learning a rhythm.

Fran6co,

'Bang on' means 'correct' or 'right'.

Ummm... Not gang bang Francis, but back onto topic, we're talking about blowing in holes and long sticks right? Stop!

Good effort Paul, the instrument you used sounds pretty close to the Djalu stick Vernon played on too!

Thanks Guan

It is a Milminyina Dhamarrandji D/F that I got off Kyle a while ago, a big Djalu type instrument. It got delivered to Colin (A/arts) and I picked it up during a didge evening he had at his place. Colin really liked it and offered me TWO other instruments from his collection in exchange for it, I must admit I was tempted but I am glad I turned him down and kept it. here's a pic
