Welcome to the forum. It is great to see new people with such a deep interest in learning to play some Yolngu style yidaki.
I think we have already met in Forlimpopoli - I was the chap doing the translating from English into Italian:)
The second last clip you sent (GanambarrEForForum) sounds really good, especially the last dithu dhirrl dhirrl part which I find flows very nicely. I agree with the others that the sound is a bit cleaner than the Yolngu sound. something that I notice a lot also in my own playing. Guan's analogy between languages I think fits really nicely. If you learn directly from a native speaker you pick up many more of the subtleties than if you learn in a "course".

Nice one Paul, you're improving! I like the effect you are creating with the Djalu E flat/F the most, those tongued accents are getting there mate. What you're doing is good for practice and for muscle-memory, once you're more confident, up the speed a little and you'll be almost there

See how Dhapan can get those tongued accents sounding really clean and sharp? That's what we all want to aim for.

Not really half a year, but couldn't wait to get some feedback again, this time a full version of a freestyle piece of today ...
Getting a real throat/voice effect is really hard for me, but I feel I am making little progress, although slow ... ???

Bibibak's playing (which I really, really like), for example around 20 until 25 seconds he plays slow "dithu dithus", when he drags it out at the end of those tongue movements, and this overtone type of "huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh" sounds in the background, how exactly would his tongue position be, on the long drag of the movement ?

PS: Progress made harder by our eternal winter and all sorts of colds and stuff here in Austria, we've had snow here in the city since the end of December 2009. Today - 11 March 2010 - we have heaps of fresh snow again, last Monday it was -14 C !

You are sounding better and better, those tongued accents are getting really really good! With Bibibak's playing, I don't think he is doing anything special with his tongue when playing the overtone note. Can you indicate the time (ie. 40-42 seconds) when it does the overtone note that we can focus our attention on?

I'd like to send you some sunshine and warmth but it is getting cold here as well

With Bibibak, the overtones I mean are there almost all the time, but for example in the "ditho drll, drll, drll, drll, drll, drll, drll, toooootoooootoootooooooooo, drll, too", starting on about 20 seconds. Hope I got that sentence right
I mean the sound on the "drll's", it sounds so effortless, and yet there is that typical "yolngu-overtone-effekt" ... You sure it is not also the position of the tongue, or is it again "perfect use of voice mixing in perfectly with the drone" ...
Or maybe a combination of this and the shape of the mouth together with the power of the cheeks? So hard to write about this stuff ...

What do you mean with "cold" ? We had our first day now with temperatures just above zero in the afternoon ... (off-course we had snow again in the night ...)

Your playing is continually improving. Great work:)

For your question about the overtone sound, (that is not the tooot - this may cause a bit of confusion as most of us would call the overtone the toot.), it is a combination of tongue throat and the right amount of voice, the only part you are missing is that "right" amount of voice.

Here on the other side of the alps it is also pretty chilly.. last week the wind was blowing at around 200km/h which was an impressive thing to behold:)

Has anyone used SoundCloud b4? I just recorded myself playing this after hearing all the wonderful technique on here. But the result is not very good, the playback on SoundCloud is ummm erratic? Or is it just me?

Never tried SoundCloud ..., your recording sounds great though, hmmm..., u have that raw touch will playing, sounds good ... Is that a Bruce you are playing there, sounds like a thin responsive mandapul ...

I use a Zoom H4N Recorder, does a good job, especially on a wooden floor
