Gday fellas, new player from Wollongong NSW here - just picked up my first didg on Friday.

I've been wanting to learn for about 2 years now but just haven't had the time to pick one up and start. I'm a piano teacher so spare time to learn a 2nd/3rd instrument is hard to come by. I'm having some real problems getting the breathing going (no doubt a common problem  ) but otherwise I seem to be ok with getting a decent drone out - even if it's only for a few seconds haha

Hoping to get some more pointers from what looks to be a pretty experienced group of players here :)

Welcome aboard Ben! :)
Looking forward to hear your playing.
As for pointers, I really liked the exercices in the Tony Colley and Matt Reed cd. ("Playing the Didgeridoo" it's called).
It's a five cd set, so if you're not interested in buying them, just send me your email and I'll send you back the exercices I'm talking about.
;)

Hi Ben,

Hope you enjoy it here, welcome aboard. With circular breathing, try playing into your didgeridoo for as long as you can to sustain the drone, and when you've run out of air, keep your lips to the instrument and breathe through your nose, and then blow again. This gets you into the habit of what is required in circular breathing n will strengthen the musculature involved to properly circular breathe even if you can't get the flow going first time around. A common mistake is to break the seal between lips and mouthpiece and to breathe in through the mouth.

You may find that practising like this for a couple of days will give you the strength to get your first few seconds of circular breathing shortly after, and once you've got it, there's no looking back :D :D

Its then just a matter of learning vocal calls, different rhythms/techniques etc. This is the part that will take time to develop, don't expect to play well straight away but after a few weeks you should notice the beginnings of rhythm creation.

Good luck and enjoy and let us know how you go!

Guan

Thanks guys - I've got the breathing going now... I may have spent all day yesterday trying  Not perfect, but it's getting there (just happy that I can do it).

I got a CD with the didg that does animal calls etc. but I'm trying more to get the rhythms for the time being.
