This is Isaiah Barra'kawuy or 'Widi' as he is more commonly known to family. His nickname comes from the manner in which he used to sleep as a baby, with hands curled up like that of a young wallaby or weti... Widi, weti, get it?
Widi is only 6 years old. His competency on yidaki is amazing for a youngster, and one can only guess how good he will be in 10 to 15 years time.
His father Mirarra' Burarrwanga sits beside him in this video clip, hair recently shaved in preparation for army training.

Nice! He's ripping it up. I hope he does keep it up as he'll be one to watch in the not too distant future.

Hey Jason,
Actually, Mirarra' isn't much of a yidaki player. He can play of course, like most men in the community, but his skill level is middle of the road by Yolngu standards. I've recorded him previously but did not think his playing was up to standard so have not put him up on YouTube.
Mind you, Widi's got heaps of good teachers to learn from including other kids his age still practising on plastic pipes!

Hmm, that's interesting. His instruments, mind you, are rippers
