Malangay' (also spelt Malngay in Yothu Yindi CD cover notes, but Malangay' is orthographically correct) is a brilliant 29 year old yidaki player who is in hot demand in the Gove Peninsula region of eastern Arnhem Land. He is invariably called upon to play yidaki for the Rirratjingu, his mother's clan group. Indeed, though Malangay' was booked to attend the Anseong Baudeogi Namsadang international festival last year for which I was tour manager for the group, he was not able to attend because of a death in the family and Witiyana's and Wanyupi Marika's insistence that he stays back in Gove to play yidaki during the funeral.

It was an utter joy to finally be able to record Malangay' live! This guy owes me several thousand dollars in lost airfares, so in my mind this is how much this video clip is worth. Enjoy to the max...

The yidaki used on this occasion was one made by Djarrambal Wanambi, who is married to Aaron Nalkuma's sister and who lives out at Bawaka outstation.
