I found the instrument in this shot particularly interesting- looks like some Ganalbingu designs like what I've seen from Daphne Banyawarra, but I can't tell for sure. None the less, a nice photograph.

This looks like the Open Day at Oenpelli or similar or a group of Arnhem Landers on tour further south. Typical WAL adornment on this stick. Nice looking instrument.

I thought so too- though the instrument itself seems quite long ;)

I'll see if I can dig up any information on the specific location where this shot was taken- my guess is that it's further south, more of a tour shot.

Western Arnhem Land sticks being shorter is a generalization. As they're often selected to match the songmans preferred registry there are often longer sticks in use. Check out this beast from The Bomb!

Point taken- the earlier referenced instrument seems a bit longer, but I think that's an optical illusion give the taper of the stick itself. And nice shot of The Bomb!

Hey Kyle,

I had a similar Blanasi instrument. It was big and weighty, large bore throughout.

Nice pic btw Jason & Kyle!

I have a suspicion that this photo was taken at the 1977 South Pacific Arts Festival held in New Zealand. The man with Didgeridoo i am pretty certain is David Blanasi, The man in the centre is Djoli Laiwanga, the far might be Roy Ashley.

what is the Provenance of the photo? where did it come from?

Yes, it's definitely Blanasi and his boys. I came across this photo online years ago, but don't recall where and I don't know where Jason found it either. You'll note that this thread is almost 3 years old!
