I'm trying to compile reading list covering different aspects of Aboriginal culture but all the interesting stuff is expensive, out of print or hard to get! Anyone come across anything worthwhile I might be able to afford or order from Amazon UK? :-)

Hi Dave,
Here's the list of books I've read on the subject > LINK <
If I had to recommend just one, it would be by far "Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines" by David Unaipon (ed. Muecke & Shoemaker).
Check out who this fella was, besides the guy on the 50 AU$ bill : > WIKI <
It's not an anthropological study from White world into Black world, like most of the other books...
But it's told "from the inside" to the Whitefellas.
Each chapter is independent and they treat many different themes and aspects, from particular to general.
A must !!!

Hi Dave,
I've found this link recently, I think it's worth to check: http://www.tribalworldbooks.com.au/auan1Page1.html

Hi Dave,

Try Warner's "A Black Civilization" for a thorough coverage of the Yolngu, newer editions especially paperback versions are cheap and can be picked up for a few dollars. Also look out for anything written by the Berndts (Ronald and Catherine Berndt), Elkin, Donald Thomson - or for relatively more recent publications, look for Nancy Williams, Ian Keen, Nic Peterson. That should be a start for you!

Guan

Thanks everyone!

Managed to get hold of a 1964 edition of 'A Black Civilization' for just £5.00 from Amazon. An inscription reveals it once belonged to the Rev. Keith Fraser-Smith at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo!!!! Also managed to get hold of 'Aboriginal Australia: an Introductory Reader in Australian Aboriginal Studies' by Bourke for just £6.75.

Guan - it seems pointless just reading these and ignoring the realities of today, so for starters I'm going to donate equivalent sums that I spend on books etc to iDIDJ Philanthropy. If you see odd amounts cropping up now and then with no explanation you'll know I've got another bargain from Amazon :-)
