Hi Didgeridooindonesia

Checked out your posting and obviously you have a skill, especially if you are doing the carving yourself, but really this is not the place the advertise your instruments. The administrator of this forum has his own business selling genuine traditional Aboriginal didjeridu's and advertising your own business is against the forum rules. On this point, this forum encourages the playing and purchase of genuine, aboriginal made instruments as the sale of these benefits the aboriginal people (the owners of this instrument) because much of the money goes back into the aboriginal community to support their families and way of life. Everyone who contributes to this forum would not buy anything else other than a genuine instrument because they too have a desire to be part of that support and realise that many sellers/manufacturers are using the "Genuine Aboriginal Didgeridoo" label which is not only fooling the public but taking away from the aborigines what is rightfully theirs. Yes you have been honest and said that they are Indonesian and hopefully you do not sell any pretending them to be "Genuine Aboriginal Didgeridoo's" as this would be against the law. No-one can stop anyone from from making and selling a didgeridoo and there are some very good "non aboriginal didgeridoo's " available but making instruments decorated with fake looking aboriginal art could fool someone into thinking that they are buying a genuine instrument and helping the aboriginal culture when in fact they are not, especially as you have no control over how they are marketed after they leave your hands. You are obviously hard working and trying to make a living over there in Indonesia which is a credit to you as I have been there and know how hard it is but please, if you have to make and sell didgeridoo's ensure you do not decorate them like aboriginal instruments and ensure that you market and label them exactly as they are, Indonesian copies. All the best Paul

Hi Didgeridooindonesia,

I agree with Paul, as all of us on this forum. I think, it is very sad, that the most part of the world identify the Aboriginal culture and didgeridoos through the artifacts (I wouldn't say didgeridoos - these are wooden pipes!!) like yours. Although your business could have a positive effect but as Paul wrote, you have no control over it.
All the best,
John

I would normally remove this and ban the poster as this is blatant commercial spam! The only reason the person has subscribed to this forum is to advertise his business and the products the business produces. It isn't just against forum rules but it is plain boring, in one sense. In another sense, it is interesting as a topic for discussion, which is why I've decided to not remove the post but to edit out contact details :D :D :D :D :D

And Paul, the reason why the Forum rules stipulate no blatant commercial advertising is not because I'm afraid of competition (I don't use this forum to advertise didgeridoos for sale either), it is because a forum that is predominantly about trade would be so boring. In all the work we do at iDIDJ Australia, selling instruments is the least interesting to be honest. You'll see that this forum is not focussed on the instrument itself, it is more about culture and activism. Check out other didgeridoo forums and inadvertently there would be trade-related posts in disguise, to me, boring as hell...

But coming back to topic... I don't agree with this sort of practice in Indonesia or anywhere else for that matter. It is exploitative, unethical, and maybe illegal. Some of these instruments get passed on as "Fair Trade" and are sold through Fair Trade organisations and shops. I can't see anything Fair Trade about these sticks. Obviously it is good money for the producers/manufacturers compared to the standard wage in Indonesia, but my suggestion is, why don't you produce Indonesian musical instruments and Balinese wooden craft items instead, rather than rip-off Indigenous Australians? Balinese are famed for their handicrafts, why not use that to create beautiful carvings or furniture? The world wants that, the world doesn't need more imitation rip-off didgeridoos.

I've said my piece, anyone else feel free to comments and critique.

Guan

You know, Guan, I was going to say that responders were being too generous in their replies, but thanks for speaking frankly, and for not removing this post, because it is a good topic for discussion.

When I see what he's quoting, units in the thousands, it makes me sick to my stomach thinking about all the wasted teak trees cut for exploitive un-authentic items. And with that kind of exploitation comes a certain concomittant dishonesty. Take a look at this eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123 Note the description (AND PRICE). The seller is claiming this is an antique didgeridoo. But the didj, the pink twine and painted instruments in the background of the pics on this auction show that it's the same guy who's posting here.

Just another reason to avoid this kind of thing at all costs; people who engage in these practices will try to rip off anyone they can fool.
