How many people here are spiritually-inclined or believe in things other than hard science stuff?

Something unusual happened to me 3 days ago... sorry for the ramble...

I was asleep and got woken by a phone call on my mobile, and a voice in my head said "Trevor, Trevor, Trevor". My conscious brain thought maybe it was Trevor Djarragaykay from Ramingining. When I picked up the phone, it turned out to be Trevor Barrarra, one of my brothers, who called from Santa Fe in New Mexico, to tell me they are over there for an art exhibition.

I can't explain this.

On another note, I wonder if there is a tendency for a certain star sign to play didgeridoo? A poll below if you're interested in participating, the results will be interesting.

Found this on the web about Pisceans, I'm usually sceptical about such things but it seems to ring true!

Yeah, I'm a 100% Pisces myself although I tend not to have the down and depressed side to me (not a bad thing in this case). Bring on those many holidays I say!

Most interesting. I've been a professional scientist for 24 years. Started out as a Neurobiologist at the Centre for Research on Perception and Cognition, Sussex University; worked my way up through the ranks of UK Government Scientist looking at driver behaviour; ended-up as a Clinical Scientist in Cardiothoracics at a major UK research hospital. Read a load of papers, wrote a load of papers, crunched a load of numbers. Despite the hard-headed career I've experienced things that just don't fit in with existing paradigms. Now retired, I've taken to reading up on quantum physics, quantum mechanics, QED, general relativity, special relativity and chaos theory. My impression from all this life-experience so far is that the universe was built f*cking weird from the outset, but some may not get the chance to witness this at large. Fewer wish to think beyond the realms of safety!

Also a pisces...i just wanted to share that a few years ago i did an astrology class and we acted out the planets each one of us taking on the personality of each planet and sat in the positions of how they appeared that particular night...it was fun, and a great way of getting to know the planets and what messages they have for us....

Libra. Come for a science background, but I believe that just because you can't measure something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I forgot about this thread lol, yup me too, the material world and the spiritual world are two separate but interconnected things that's what I believe but still discovering what else this reality means...

I am not sure whether I should submit a post on that issue but I could not help. The example Guan gives is an interesting one. But there is a plausible explanation in my opinion. We remember the hits always and forget the misses. How about all the other occasions (assuming that this is not the single one)in which Guan or we think that it is this or that person caling us but it is actually somebody else. If we would keep the statistics, I am pretty sure that it would not look any better than a random event.

People think that telepathy works because they think about somebody and this person rings them etc. But we also think about so many other millions of times and it does not happen. Given the sheer number of event, it is normal (and statistically almost required) that some of the guess turn out to be true.

By the way, there are many studies done on these issues, if people are interested they can PM me.

Absolutely, these things happen! And H and I are spiritually-aware. When we meet you someday, we've got some stories for you as well! Too much to go into here. However people will be noticing things more and more all the time. And what they used to call 'strange phenomena', will become quite ordinary.

Watch this to see what real can be... bringing quantum mechanics to everyday large-scale objects that we can see... the implications are reality can be anything you want it to be and it can make you anything it wants you to be.

Hum... strange affirmation : he says the little metal board can only be in 2 different states at the same time (vibrating and NOT vibrating) only when light is off, temperature is low, and no one can "see" it... meaning this has not been seen nor filmed ! So how does he know it really reacts the way he tells it does ?

Now concerning people being in different places at the same time, we can find reports of such experiences in ethnologic books on shamanism.

TED talks can be indeed inspring and interesting. This guys is talking about quantum entanglement and physicists from Geneva Switzerland created two entagled photons, separated them and sent them down a cable to the two villages which were 18 kilometres apart. Each photon at its new location could instantly sense its twin’s behaviour without any direct communication. Based on this experiment some guys even claim that ther could be parellel/multi universes etc in which different realities can occur. But keep in mind that none of these claims are testable or falsifiable and therefore taken seriously at this moment.

Going back to the main topic, we should be careful before we attirubute our observations to QM and all the stuff like new age guys very readily do. People are trying very hard to understand this kind of scientific phenomena and we can't just justify telepathy based on real science. Telepathy is pseuidoscience- and there are many studies as I said before to bust any claims regarding telepathy and similar stuff (psychics, fortunetellers, homeopathy etc etc)Unfortunately all these fail in a controlled experiment.
I think that before we go too far ahead with our claims, we should remember Ocham's razor and try to choose the simplest explanation possible. We should always think aout our negative controls (all the other times these strange stuff not occuring?) .

there are infinite number of events happening at this very moment all over the place and just by chance some of them occur in a way that puzzles us and we seek otherworlds explanations. If you have 5 coins, the chance is only 3% getting all heads when you flip them. If you flip them 100 times, you have 96% chance of getting all heads in one of these shots.

Thomas Kida has a wonderful book about all these stuff: Don't believe everything you think. stronly recommended.

I followed up on who this Aaron O'Connell might be, he even has his own Wikipedia entry:

And was awarded by Science journal last year (2010) with "Breakthrough of the Year".

He's also published in Nature before.

To me, that makes for one smart cookie me thinks. I'll put my bets on O'Connell to revolutionise technology in the near to immediate future, he has gone into bizniz and has already produced the most sensitive motion detector in the world, several magnitudes of order more sensitive than the previous best. Also something called a quantum microphone which can "hear" chemicals reacting.
