igot a good queztion----iz it true when a yidahki is painted two timez that the second time is hiding a secret art underneath? any1 heya know the truth???

Ive heard that as well Matt Bartlett in the UK had one for sale years ago that had been repainted in white ochre but you could see the origional artwork underneath it

we dont do that in top end maybe overseas mob ay?we dont give or show madayin rom malany or secrets to ngapakis thats what we call europeans or non aboriginal ppls where we come from even other tribes we cant show or strangers or other families you can ask balangi thats guan he know he got the full story everythinggu

Hi Garawirrtjaboys I would agree thanks for sharing your thaughts with us ngapakis/balanda but would not painting over the Rom keep it secret to non aboriginals and I think the Yidaki I refer to came from different mob possibly Yirrkala rather than Elcho Island, It is cool to have you here and to share thoughts and opinions with you.

I know western artists that re-use a canvas when they can't afford one - just paint over what was underneath if they consider it poor.
We often read more into things when we don't know the whole story - sometimes we like ot think there is more to a story than just everyday practicalities.
