Hi,

I've played didgeridoo ( as I had no clue what a yidaki was! ) for a few months and I really discover the traditional way of playing it recently on a trip to Arnhem Land.
To me, the traditional way is much richer in sounds, much more complex in rhythm, much nicer indeed ;
I realised the only way to play yidaki at a good level is two spend ( a lot of ) weeks with an aboriginal community but it's not so easy;

THEREFORE I PROPOSE:
To write down as much rhythm as we can here in order to keep getting inspired and improving:

I remember only ( shame on me ) 2 rhythm taught by Manymurnuk:

Ngalandi ( Moon ):

Dith-thu wee duurlll Doo ( D t w d . . D . . ) It's a 9 beats rhythm

Mimi ( Spirits )

Dirrll Doorrll Dith-thu ( D . D . D t . . ) 8 beats rhythm played quite fast

There's a rhythm apparently popular among the didgeridoo players as well:

Wee doo doo Wee doo doo Wee doo ( W d d W d d W d ) 8 beats

Adam Marrigala plays often those 2 at the beginning

the basic sounds ) like

Wee

thu ( starting with the tongue a bit between the front teeth )

dith ( startind with the tongue touching the palet ( d ) and finishing between the front teeth ( th )

Dith-thu are therefore often linked

Kta

ta ( the tongue starting touching the palet and the front teeth at the same time)

Dhup ( tongue starting between the front teeth , the p is done by tighting the lips, that's the trumpeted note )

I think this i a very very good idea writing some of the rhythe down.

Have you heard the Milkay Mununggurr "Hard Tongue Didgeridoo" CD ? The technic you tell is almost the same that is on the CD.

All this on the CD is basic stuff, and very very good.

If you don't have this CD, you should buy if in the ididgeaustralien shop, as I did - it is very very helpfull.

Good to see you here and glad to be able to help with rhythms. I'll get those videos up on YouTube during the week of Marimunuk playing yidaki with you guys. It is a bit hard to write down the rhythms in notation form...

The Hard Tongue CD is very good for some of the basics

Francois is really trying hard Ryohei is really good, and you can easily see that he is the one that have pratice much before the trip.

Have Ryohei used Djalus CD to practising before this trip, do you know that, Guan?
