I would suggest you get a copy of Jeremy Cloake's Balanda Yidaki Dhukarr CD which introduces tonguing and mouth sounds in a very simple but highly effective manner. See here http://www.resonance.co.nz/music.html
There are also mouthsounds on some of the older recordings including Alice Moyle's Songs of the Northern Territory series which are a great reference.

Hi Guys
this is my first post on here for a while hope all is well with all people reading this and that 2009 will be alot better for everyone.
I didnt particulay want to start a new thread on this topic so im going to limpit myself onto this one and ask what people think of this particular lick I did with a new toy I got over christmas the camera that is and not a new stick.
I have been following the Jeremy Cloake CD after using the Mil*&^Y and Djalu teaches CD's mixed with basic Wal tech and my own slant on what I personally term Tradish (as im never going to be able to play traditional as i am Balanda and not indigiounous australian). any road up please feel free to comment on this little piece I did for You Tube with my new toy.
It is a slightly rushed piece, no thought went into it as I was trying out camera, editing etc any way here we go please enjoy and please make comments even if youy think that it is total cack I want to know as it will make me better.
happy seasons greatings and a good forward thinking 2009 for everyone.

Hey Stockie,
It sounds good, but I think the voice sometimes overpowers the tonguing. As Guan has mentioned the tongued accents could be accentuated more which in turn will tone down the vocal bit when they're coupled. Keep it up and good work.
Kyle

I always find that the tounging side hard do you guys refer to the main tounging is lacking onthe main Drong, Drong parts? if so what are some of the ways to get over this or is it just practice?

Hi from the Continent Stockie,
the main point your working on sounds soo familiar to me. The way I improved the tongue accent a bit over the last year is practicing the retroflex movement intensively (kind of tongue workout) for about a month and then changing to a month of focussing on a relaxed, kind of flapping movement of the tongue and so on. To play with a relaxed AND powerful tongue is the key in my opinion. Hope I got a tiny bit of the roling yet. And I'm still young
By the way: I work with the often mentioned CD from Jeremy Cloake. In my opinion the best instruction a balanda can get.
So this is my attempt:

Let's go on making funny hollow log sounds

Hi Jens,
That sounds good mate, those accents are strong and very sharp, good work.
I would question the place of retroflexion however in tongued accents in NEAL playing. The thing I noticed is that retroflexion works better for WAL, whereas for NEAL, the main focus should be on the front of the mouth, where the tip of the tongue and the lips meet so to speak. Having good control of this area is crucial to getting that special 'dith' we all love to hear. If using retroflexion in NEAL playing, the accents tend to be too blunt and without the colour and texture if done another way. The thing to aim for with NEAL tongued accents is a 'curling' effect, to bend the note of the accent a bit towards the end by a slight tightening of the lips. Using retroflexion gives the tongued accents too much force which makes it difficult to achieve this 'curling' effect. The other thing too, now that we're comparing WAL and NEAL technique, is that WAL tongued accents are more 'whole of mouth', compared to 'front of mouth' as I pointed out above for NEAL.
The other thing that I've found to be helpful in learning is to practise on larger-bored, deeper-keyed yidaki, because these sorts of sticks aren't so forgiving and really get you to work on technique. The high-powered, strong backpressure Fs and F#s that are irresistibly enjoyable to play have a certain drawback and that is that any amount of increased pressure within the oral cavity elicits a good accented beat regardless of what the tongue or mouth is doing.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts and observations, I don't know if others share the same view. I'd like to do a recording showing the different sorts of tongues accents, and will get it happening when I have a spare moment...
Guan

avanced stuff.. I like it. A bit of a demo would be great.
Btw: the 'Bolda' Hunter DVD is awesome, specially the bits about including a lot of body aprts. If I make progress at my "dith-ngorrow" I will need a mago
All the best from old Europe (it's springbreak )
