Don't know what heading this fits under, but I'm curious what others look for in a didge.

Personally I like longer, deeper key instruments with big bells and large well hollowed termite bores.

Resonance and clarity is very important to me. A test I do is to stop playing and turn my ear to the mouth hole and listen for how long it continues to resonate. A good stick should actually vibrate when playing it, and continue to resonant for a few second after you quit. I think of a great didge as igniting when you start to play, you start to blow and there is a pause, then it just suddenly ignites and starts to glow. A really good didge maintains a clear clean note no mater if you play loud or just a whisper.

My favorite keys are 'C', 'Bb', 'low A', 'G#', 'low G'. I like the key of 'D' really well too, and come to think, I like 'D#', 'E', and 'F', hey I like all keys in didgeridoos, you got to have them all. But for most fun, I like the low notes, I like to play long drawn out slow notes, so soft you can barely hear, then build them up, then back 'em down.

What about you all??

To each their own bongodoggie.

Most of us on here are in to the traditional styles of playing and tend to like the medium to higher pitched sticks. My collection ranges from about C# up to G# with my preferred range between Eb and F#. Have a listen to some of the clips we've posted on this forum and you'll see what type of playing style we tend to like.

Hi Kyle,

So how do you judge the sound quality of a trad stick?
What do you look for in appearance?

The 'feel' of an instrument is the most important characteristic in my opinion, although this of course is made up of many other factors - backpressure, response to tongued inflections, the relationship between the fundamental (drone) and overtone (toot), vocal resonance etc.

Appearance is important, but secondary to the above mentioned characteristics. I prefer traditional instruments with natural (or as close to natural as possible) bores in the 'old way' and I like them to be painted in ochres if possible.

Hi Robert and all,

I moved this topic because the "Technical Issues and Problems" section is a Help Desk for problems encountered in using the Forum.
